eggshell

This morning I walked into the paint store with an egg in hand. I told the employee we are ready to paint our bathroom and showed him the egg.
"This is the color we would like."
He didn't even bat an eye. I was hoping he might humor me by sharing some fun stories of other odd objects people have brought in for color matching, but he was the quiet, hard working type.
The last time I went in I took one of my favorite childrens books to have them match some colors from the pages. The guy who helped me then got really excited and started talking about COLOR and things he learned from art school. That was awesome.
The color was matched and now I am ready to paint and prime. Anyone want to talk the girls to the park or the library for a few hours?

The photo doesn't show the color very well. It is a very subtle green. The egg came from Fuzzy Wuzzy, our Araucana who was the only chicken to stop laying over the winter months but she's up and running again!

Happy Birthday Pablo!

Blooming Branch

When Hope told us she was bringing her monster orchid plant to our house for the winter I groaned. I knew it would take up a bunch of room and it seemed like it would just be another thing we would need to care for. I can barely keep our sofa free from laundry that needs to be folded and put away.

It turned out to be even bigger than I had imagined but it is glorious to wake up every morning and watch the morning sun greet a hundred blossoms like these.
Thank you Mom!

Pablo takes the cake

Whenever we go to school celebrations, Pablo heads straight for the cake walk. As a boy, he walked 'round and 'round many a cake walk at his elementary school with no luck. Once Sahara was in school he started up again, purchasing ticket after ticket at both the May Fair and the Winter Light Fair every year. I would roll my eyes at his enthusiasm and point out that we could buy a really good cake with the money we spent on cake walk tickets every year.

Yesterday was the Heart of the Village celebration at Sahara's new school. As we headed up to the first grade classroom to watch the students perform a shadow puppet play, Pablo side stepped the classroom door and hurried down the hall for a go at a new cake walk. And he won!

I was flabbergasted when he snuck back into the first grade with a cake in his hands. A Sweet Life Cake nonetheless! We invited friends over for dessert last night to share the momentous occasion.
